Back Pain During Pregnancy

Posted on August 28, 2023September 10, 2023

Pregnancy is a time of transformation, emotions, and, for many women, the experience of back pain. This is a common complaint that deserves attention and special care. Here are seven practical ways to find relief for back pain during pregnancy:

1. Maintain Good Posture for Back Pain Relief

As your belly grows, your body’s center of gravity shifts, resulting in adjustments to your posture. To avoid the sensation of leaning forward, many pregnant women tend to lean backward, which can strain the lower back muscles and contribute to back pain. Maintaining good posture is key:

  • Stand upright and tall.
  • Lift your chest and relax your shoulders.
  • Avoid locking your knees.
  • When standing, keep your feet apart for better balance. If you need to stand for a long time, place one foot on a low stool and take regular breaks.
  • Posture care should also extend to sitting. Choose a chair that supports your back or position a small pillow in the lower back region.

2. Choose Appropriate Footwear

Opt for shoes with low heels and good arch support rather than completely flat footwear. Avoid high heels, as they can accentuate imbalance and increase the risk of falls. A maternity support belt can also be an option, providing additional comfort.

3. Lift with Care

When lifting small objects, bend your knees and use the strength of your legs, avoiding bending at the waist or straining your back. Remember your limits and ask for help when needed.

4. Sleep on Your Side and Prioritize Comfort

Sleeping position matters. Opt to lie on your side, not your back, and keep one or both knees bent. Using supportive pillows between your knees, under your belly, and behind your back can provide more comfort.

5. Try Heat, Cold, or Massage

While evidence is limited, applying heat, cold, or gently massaging the back region can offer quick relief from muscle-related pain.

6. Incorporate Physical Activity into Your Routine

Regular physical activity can strengthen your back and reduce pain during pregnancy. With the approval of a healthcare professional, consider gentle activities such as walking or water exercises. A physiotherapist can teach you beneficial stretches and exercises.

Another option is to stretch the lower back region. Get on your hands and knees, aligning your head with your back. Engage your abdomen, slightly arching your back. Hold for a few seconds before relaxing while keeping your back as straight as possible. Gradually increase repetitions. Consult a healthcare professional for guidance on other stretches.

7. Consider Complementary Therapies

Studies suggest that acupuncture may alleviate back pain during pregnancy. Some women also find comfort in acupuncture, meditation, or massages, for example. However, more research is needed. If considering complementary therapies, discuss them with your healthcare professional and always inform them about your pregnancy.

Know When to Seek Medical Guidance

If back pain is severe or persists for more than two weeks, consult your healthcare professional. They may recommend treatments such as simple pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, or other options. Remember that back pain during pregnancy can also indicate premature labor or a urinary tract infection. If back pain is accompanied by vaginal bleeding, fever, or discomfort while urinating, contact your healthcare professional immediately.

Back pain during pregnancy is a common experience, but it doesn’t have to be debilitating. With simple measures like maintaining proper posture, engaging in appropriate physical activities, and considering complementary therapies under medical guidance, you can experience pregnancy with more comfort and fully enjoy this special moment.
